Neuropsychology was recognized as a specialty of Psychology
In 2004, through CFP Resolution No. 002, updated by CFP Resolution No. 13/2007 (CFP, 2007) and No. 23/2022 (CFP, 2022).
“Neuropsychological assessment considers the brain-behavior relationship as the foundation for measuring various neuropsychological functions. It is a category of psychological assessment and must, therefore, be performed by a psychologist in accordance with the regulations of the Federal Council of Psychology. It consists of a technical process, based on ethical and scientific principles, which aims to:
a. describe the current cognitive, affective, and behavioral functioning of the individual, highlighting their areas of strengths and difficulties;
b. identify therapeutic needs, recommend interventions, and point out possible outcomes;
c. contribute to differential diagnosis;
d. monitor treatment progress and identify new issues that may require professional attention, offering feedback in a competent and empathetic manner.”
Technical Clinical Supervisor: Neuropsychological Assessment aims to investigate cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning using multiple resources available to the psychologist.
The pillars of this assessment are:
a. Clinical interviews: fundamental for raising initial hypotheses that guide the assessment process. It allows collecting information from the person being evaluated and/or informants about the history of clinical development of complaints, accessing data on cognitive, behavioral, and emotional performance. It is important to demarcate changes observed over time, such as conditions after the occurrence of a brain injury or those that have always been present in the person’s life;
b. Observation: enables the identification of congruences and incongruences regarding the examinee’s and informants’ complaints, behavioral manifestation, the level of the problem examined, among others, contributing to the elucidation of the reported clinical condition;
c. Neuropsychological tests and tasks: essential in investigating changes in neuropsychological functioning and involves choosing tests and/or execution tasks appropriate to the complaint, including the psychologist’s analysis of instruments with better quality and direction for the functions to be measured (see CFP Resolution No. 31/2022);
d. Inventories and scales: represent an important resource in neuropsychological examination and can be both self-report and informant-report. They indicate behavioral aspects and/or symptoms that relate to or add information to the results of direct testing, as well as for differential diagnosis.

Interventions in Neuropsychology
Additionally, the implementation of all interventions in Neuropsychology should be based on the following principles:
- Interventions based on scientific evidence and grounded in established theories of human neuropsychological functioning and social organization;
- Continuous process of evaluation and monitoring through systematic assessment methods of interventions, impacts, and results, contributing to continuous improvement and sustainability of effective neuropsychological interventions;
- Comprehensive knowledge of human neurodevelopment throughout the life course. Neuropsychology interventions should be substantiated by knowledge about the structural and functional maturation of the brain and related concepts, such as neuroplasticity;
- Socio-ecological perspective consisting of the analysis of human development contexts (broader social, cultural, economic, and environmental factors), emphasizing the interdependence of the individual, family, community, and society;
- Understanding of Neuropsychology as a field of interdisciplinary knowledge and praxis that is interested in the relationships between mental functions and the central nervous system;
- Participatory interventions with an empowering and collaborative implementation process, carried out in partnership with key stakeholders;
- Neuropsychological intervention should be designed to produce long-term effects that will improve cognitive and socio-emotional skills and the well-being of the population and the individual, potentially reducing inequalities. Such interventions should be based on practices and policies that will ensure the long-term impact of interventions;
- Individual and cultural diversity recognizes the broad scope of factors such as race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, gender, age, disability, social class, education level, religion/spiritual orientation, and other cultural dimensions. Neuropsychology interventions analyze intersectionality, oppression, and discrimination factors as social determinants of health;
- Effective interventions require intersectoral collaborations with key stakeholders.
Finally, it is emphasized that the main objective of intervention in Neuropsychology is to create action strategies in the health-disease process to foster empowerment and social participation of the groups and individuals served. Such intervention practices can also permeate health promotion and prevention for rehabilitation.
